Wedding Reading Tips
|
|
- There are no rules about readings. They don’t have
to be from the bible, or even be well known. Song lyrics are great, poems
are perfect, and greeting cards with a special meaning can bring everyone
to tears!
- Your readings should reflect your individual
personality. If you hated Shakespeare in school and your friends know it
– don’t pick one of his sonnets for a reading!
- Pick readers who have a special relationship with
you, and who are comfortable being in front of a group. Nerves are OK,
but they shouldn’t be in terror about reading in public.
- Allow your readers to choose their own readings and
surprise you. If you do this, make sure they provide copies to the
minister before the ceremony so that someone is making sure they are
appropriate and not too long.
- Your readers could also write something personal to
share with you at your ceremony. Again, make sure they run it by the
minister!
- Have your readers use a mike. Especially if you are
outside, sound travels, and you want all of your guests to hear every
special word.
- Make sure that your readers come forward when they
read so that everyone can see them and hear them better. It can be very
special for them to take the minister’s place in the center and speak to
you directly. It’s also OK to give them a hug afterwards!
- Coach your readers to speak slowly. There is a
tendency to rush when nervous and in front of a crowd.
- Tell them not to worry about tears! Tears of joy are
what a wedding ceremony is all about and sometimes it is the readings,
done by special friends that bring out the emotion in everyone.
- If you have special words you want to share, but
don’t have anyone to do a reading for you, ask your minister to include
the reading in her/his remarks.
- You or your fiancé could also read something special
to each other.
- Including words of the readings in your program is a
nice touch and gives your friends a special piece to take home with them.
